Subject: Dyslexic Librarian's Alliance

Hello all,
My name is Brianne Mintz. I am a Children's Librarian in Springfield, New Jersey.I'm looking to start a Dyslexic Librarian's Alliance to bring not only awareness of dyslexia in youth services, but to change the way dyslexic children are served and understood. I need approximately 20 people interested in joining.

I was diagnosed with dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia at six years old. I have struggled my entire life with not only making sense of words, letters and numbers, but with depth perception, motor skills and coordination. I spent much of my education shunted from in school suspension to the principal's office because no one really knew what to do with me. In 9th grade, I was assigned a counselor who changed my entire education. He was able to come up with a plan that worked with me and for me, and I was able to graduate high school- which I never thought would happen.  I now have a future I never thought possible- I went on not only to earn my Bachelors, but my MLIS as well. Sadly, my story is not uncommon. Many dyslexic children fall through the cracks despite newer research and technologies. There are no statistics on how many dyslexic people go on to  higher education. While I will struggle with these disorders for the rest of my life (just like millions of other dyslexic children), I have learned to not only work with my symptoms but to use them to reach out to children just like me.

My mission now is to use my experiences to help the children I serve every day. I strive to make not only my library but the  libraries around me into safe, welcoming and understanding environments for children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities by changing the way we label and the materials we offer. I'd like to see us  partner with parents to give them the tools to help their children succeed not only in school, but in daily life. And, I want to  ensure Youth Services librarians better understand learning disabilities and the role they play in helping children succeed. I strongly believe a Dyslexic Librarian's Alliance is not only necessary, but critical to helping the children we serve. Please consider joining this important mission and make this alliance a reality.
