Subject: Leap into Science Wind Training Workshop 6-6-2019
Date: May 1st 2019

FYI,

The New Jersey State Library, NJ Makers Day, and the Newark Museum are collaboratively offering free in-person trainings for public and school librarians/staff and staff of afterschool organizations in rural and urban communities using the Leap into Science curriculum developed by The Franklin Institute. It integrates open-ended science activities with children’s books, designed for children ages 3-10 and their families. Three different workshop models are covered in one training: preschool (ages 3-5), elementary (ages 6-10) and one for families, all focused on wind as a science/literacy curriculum topic for Year 2.

Training offered:

·         Thursday, June 6, 2019 at the Sussex County Library, Main Branch, 125 Morris Tpke, Newton, NJ 07860, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Training led by Sharon Rawlins, NJ State Library. The schedule only allows for a 10 minute break; snacks will be provided.

The number of participants is limited. Priority will be given to any library/organization registering more than one person from the same library/organization for the training. If interested in attending, please contact Sharon Rawlins, NJ State Library, ...@njstatelib.org" style="color: #2199e8; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.3; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">sraw...@njstatelib.org, 609-278-2640 ext. 116.

Anyone being trained must agree to:

Complete the entire 4-hour training on the high-quality science and literacy curriculum (multiple people from one library/organization strongly encouraged).

Offer at least three Leap into Science balance themed storytimes/workshops in your organization by April, 2020.

Participate in quarterly conference calls and ongoing evaluation activities (i.e. surveys, interviews, site visits).

Participate in Leap into Science Week, February 24, - March 1, 2020.

Attendees will:

Receive ongoing support and become a part of a Leap into Science National Network.

Have access to the national Leap into Science leadership team and online resources.

Receive one set of curriculum and materials kit per organization.

Leap into Science is a nationwide program developed by The Franklin Institute Science Museum and the National Girls Collaborative Project funded by the National Science Foundation. Activities can easily supplement S.T.E.A.M. programs and fit your individual organizations goals. The program empowers educators to offer workshops in community settings like libraries, museums, and out-of-school time programs to engage under-served audiences in accessible and familiar settings.
