I met this author at the National Book Festival in DC. He shared this information with me and asked if I would share it with youth services library staff.

Dr. Andrew Vassall is the author of two books for children. “The Black Crayon” and “Family Mean Love.” “The Black Crayon: is a colorful, vibrant, and captivating story of a box of colorful crayons, with one Black Crayon who struggles to be accepted. If not for the love of a little girl named Laila, this Black Crayon begins to see his inner beauty.  This book not only teaches self-awareness but also teaches cultural awareness to young children. It highlights the principles of DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) and the companion workbook has resources aligned with Common Core Standards to help teachers. “Family Means Love” is an enlightening book that discusses how family dynamics have changed over time.  The book displays various family units and how each one focuses on the emphasis of love.

I have done Meet the Author at Barnes & Noble in the Willow Grove area of Montgomery County, PA and at the Lightbridge Academy in East Windsor NJ. My school district is in Cheltenham, PA.
