The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), opened registration for three online courses in Winter 2009: "Booktalks Quick and Simple" (Nancy Keane); "Boys and Books: Encouraging Early Teen and Tween Boys to Read" (Jenine
Lillian) and "Power Programming for Teens" (Amy Alessio).

Registration for YALSA's online courses is available at www.ala.org/yalsa. Four-week courses cost $135 for YALSA members, $175 for ALA members and $195 for nonmembers. Fairytale retelling titles needed

Hi everyone and happy holidays,

I'm posting this on behalf of Susan Conlon, Princeton Public Library. She's putting together a “Re-Told Fairy Tales” YA Fiction list and is looking for suggestions. I've added a few and will add more since I wrote an entry on fairytale retellings for the Continuum Encyclopedia of Young Adult Literature but don't have the bibliography handy.
I also added titles from ALA's Popular Paperback Committee's Gateway to Faerie list from a few years ago.

Still accepting applications for free YA theater program

Attention YA public librarians in Atlantic, Cumberland, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Morris, Passaic, Salem, Sussex and Union couny libraries!

The offer to provide a free YA theater program in partnership with the NJ Theatre Alliance and the NJ State Library for teens in public libraries in all 21 counties is still open because I haven’t received an application from a public library in any of these counties.

I was hoping that different libraries from each county would apply from last year, but will take applications from the same libraries if necessary (but different branches would be nice). The deadline to get the application to me is ASAP – or by Dec. 19, 2008 at the latest.

Please take advantage of this program. Due to the economy, it may not be offered next year. The application is attached and the original announcement is at the bottom of this message.

FREE YA program

The State Library and the New Jersey Library Association is partnering with the NJ Theatre Alliance to provide one public library in each county a theatrical reading, workshop, or presentation geared for teens (or tweens) from March 1 – 31, 2009. Here’s the catch - you need to get your YAs (or tweens) involved. They get to pick the type of program they want and work with you to promote it to their peers.

If you have a teen group or advisory board (or a few teens that will work with younger children) that will be willing to play a major role in choosing the program and promoting it, we want to hear from you! The teens must explain in the application how they are going to promote the program among their peers. One public library from each county will be selected on the basis of how creative, effective and realistic the ideas are for promoting the program.

Specifics:
The presentations will be given at your public library from March 1 – 31, 2009. Please select a program date for your public library.
Your public library’s event will be listed on the Family Week at the Theatre website, www.familyweek.com, scheduled for March 1 – 7, 2009 to kick off a month-long celebration called The Stages Festival. All library presentations will feature professionals appropriate to the program- i.e. - actors for presentations or workshops; professional makeup artists, etc.

What’s your look? Do you, or someone you know, have a professional fashion sense that you think others can learn from? Do you like to find just the right clothing that combines your individual style with a professional appearance? If so, then you could walk the runway at YALSA’s first ever fashion event hosted by Steven Rosengard of Project Runway Season 4 on Friday, July 10, from 5 to 7 PM in Chicago!

We’re searching for 20-30 librarians who walk the walk and look the look when they work with teens and their advocates in libraries! We want to find librarians who can demonstrate how to dress professionally without having to spend a lot of money and while keeping a sense of personal style.

If you are interested in walking the runway, submit the What TO Wear application http://yalsa.ala.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/wtw_app_distributed.pdf (file in pdf) along with 2 photos or a short video (no more than 3 minutes), that you think showcases your style (or the style of your nominee).

Endowment offering classic books to young readers

The National Endowment for the Humanities is accepting applications for the We the People Bookshelf Award. This year's theme is "Picturing America." Those who win the We the People Bookshelf Award will receive a set of hardcover books for young readers. They all are related to the picturing America theme. This program is open to all public libraries and school libraries (K-12) that are located in the United States and its territories. This award will be provided to 4,000 libraries. Statewide Library Advocacy Campaign "Solving Life's Problems"

A member of the ALA Advocacy Coordinating Committee said recently that the marriage of advocacy and marketing, recognized as so important at the national level, hasn't trickled down to the states. In these economically troubled times, all New Jersey libraries are invited to register for a statewide campaign to advocate for libraries by telling your library's stories.

So if you are looking for a way to tap into public support for your library, the State Library and NJ Library Association can solve your problem! We are sponsoring a statewide marketing campaign and contest that will help you create compelling stories about your library to gain the support of community members and elected officials. It will even help your library increase its media coverage.

But we aren't stopping there. We are going to provide workshops to show you how to create digital stories. We will help you start a story bank for your library. Need more incentive? We are sponsoring a contest with great prizes and providing beautiful promotional materials to help you get the word out about your library. Of course it's free!
