Funding Opportunity for All NJ Public Libraries
Good Morning,
Prevent Child Abuse-NJ is the recipient of a five year grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Innovation and Improvement to implement the New Jersey State Parent Information and Resource Center (NJPIRC). The overall goal of NJPIRC is to improve student academic achievement and to help ensure that students in NJ, particularly those in low performing districts, achieve high academic performance. Through the NJPIRC, PCA-NJ is working to provide leadership and technical assistance to non-profit organizations and local educational agencies to help those organizations develop policies, programs, and practices that involve families in their child\x92s educational experiences. A strong body of evidence demonstrates that children are far more likely to succeed in school when their parents and caregivers are engaged in the process.
In 2007, PCA-NJ partnered with four public libraries from across the state to raise awareness among parents on the importance of getting involved in their child\x92s education and the critical role they play in promoting early literacy skills. This year, PCA-NJ will continue this process by providing a variety of resources to six additional public libraries across the state to assist them in developing or enhancing a special collection to encourage parental involvement in the education of their child, as well as funding and technical assistance to enhance the ability of public libraries to provide supportive programming for parents to address this issue.
Public libraries play a critical role in promoting literacy in their communities. By making available resources to educate parents on how they can get involved in the education of their children, as well as training for parents, and interactive literacy activities for parents and their children, libraries can help to strengthen the parents\x92 role as the primary teacher for their children, and assist them in becoming full partners in their child\x92s education.
Through the NJPIRC Library Based Parent Involvement and Family Literacy Projects Initiative, local libraries can apply for a grant of up to $ 2,500 to develop or expand a special collection of books and media resources on parent involvement and to host an event designed to help families become involved in their child\x92s education and rise to the challenge of raising healthy, happy and literate children. A brief proposal following the attached guidelines must be received by August 8, 2008. All grantees will be notified by August 20, 2008. Please call Colleen Deisroth at 732-246-8060 with any questions.
Sincerely,
Colleen Deisroth
