Hi Amy,

Your welcome. I understand how tough the job search is. Also I think you should try reaching out to Pro-Libra Associates. They are a library placement agency and they have access to jobs that haven't been posted. Is Ocean County too far from you? If not you should look into that system because it's very large and they always have a lot of openings. I do know that the pay is below the NJLA minimum so I don't know if that's a factor for you.

Dear Ms. Stevenson,

Thanks very much for getting back to me so quickly! I do appreciate your observations. Someone else on the list told me that summertime is traditionally a harder time to look for employment. I am also willing to give reference a try, so I will target those positions as well. I am in Morganville, which is a section of Marlboro township, which is in Monmouth County. Thanks again. I do appreciate it. Amy Kravitz baby...@verizon.net

I don't think a lot of librarians hire part time YA or Children's Services librarians because of the work entailed.  It also depends on the size of the library.  I have noticed that a lot of the part time positions are for adult positions.  I think more positions will be available once the summer is over so if you can wait I would.  I noticed that you are Morganville.  Is that in North or South NJ?

Hi to the List,

I am a new poster here. My name is Amy and I have been currently on a two year hiatus from the field. I have an MLS from Rutgers and I have worked in the youth services sector of the public library (in the state of NJ) for close to a decade prior to my leave.    This autumn I am looking forward to returning to my career on a part-time basis. I plan to get my resume reviewed and critiqued and ready to go. I have also tried to keep current as much as possible.    I have been a member of NJLA and I am sure, like many of you, I have read that the NJ state budget is in poor shape and that there have been a lot of cutbacks in municipalities resulting in layoffs and early retirement incentives, etc. etc. The past few weeks I have been looking at the job posts and there hasnt been much. I am not too thrilled to be looking for work at this point in time(economically) and I am hoping that I won't be banging my head against the proverbial wall when I start applying for jobs this fall.   Since I basically have been on the outside of things for the past two years I wanted to know if anyone can give me any insight into what is actually happening in the job market for public librarians at this point? I had heard that there were a lot of part-time positions available, but I don't see that many actually posted. I am aware that some libraries use librarians to work on a substitute basis. Is this something you would recommend for someone who is looking to break back into the field? Do hiring managers often look at substitute librarians as viable candidates when jobs do open up? Lastly, I remember in my hometown library that they had a separate staff from the regular workweek staff. Are there many opportunities out there for weekend staff?    Again, any advice will be greatly appreciated. Enjoy the summer.    Amy Kravitz    Morganville    baby...@verizon.net ...@verizon.net">babyfatty@verizon.net   ...@verizon.net">babyfatty@verizon.net    (please note that this won't be my email address I will be using for professional job correspondence in the future)
