I have to add my voice to Jessica's.

We all hate to do statistics but that is the only way we can quantify what we do. We do not have a product that can be counted easily. Collecting these numbers may take time, but I need to report these same statistics to our Library Board of Trustees. Our Director needs these numbers to justify our budget to the Town Council. Once you have done this, it is readily available to anyone who asks for it. We also find it handy to go back and look at these numbers when planning the following year's programs and purchasing.

I'd just like to add my two cents to this conversation.  I've worked at libraries that were well staffed and at other libraries that were understaffed.  I understand how difficult it is to find time to do this extra step when it is hard enough to find the time just to complete our basic library work.  But when libraries are facing cuts at a local and state level it is extremely important for us to justify and prove why we are integral to our communities.

There are over 300 libraries in the state and if each of us submitted our statistics in a different way (which it probably would be because if I know anything about librarians is that we like to do things our own way) it would take Sharon a very long time to compile the statistics into a format that is usable for the State Librarian.  It already takes Sharon a very long time to compile the statistics in a usable manner and that was using Survey Monkey which should have made things easier.  These statistics are used to explain why the state should pay for NJ to belong to the Summer Reading Cooperative (which gives us access to the graphics, theme, manual, etc.).  Statistics are annoying and time consuming but they are important.

Speaking for myself, I am grateful to both Sharon and Norma Blake for always advocating for us and for their hard work. Thank you Sharon!

Hi Sharon, I reallly don't mean to be rude or challenge you but I would like to know why we have to do all that you reguest below. We keep a record of the children who attend and how many books they read. I just don't get why we have to report this to your office. I know I speak for other libraries in LOGIN. Do you need these numbers for federal funding or a grant? I would really appreciate some feedback from you. I am very short staffed, my children's person is part-time, I am not using Evanced and I will answer your questions below. Just want to know why.

Hi Everyone,

To make this a bit clearer.

Everyone has to submit information 2 ways.

Everyone needs to complete the survey using Survey Monkey because the State Library didn't pay for the program component of Evanced Summer Reader online registration/report program and the question about program statistics is asked in the Survey Monkey survey. Questions 8 - 16 of the survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/878RNK7 pertain to programs.

For anyone using Evanced, the rest of the statistics needed can be compiled using the report function of Evanced. You can generate a spreadsheet in Excel to e-mail to me.

For anyone not using Evanced, I would like the statistics sent to me via e-mail. I need everyone to submit:

# of registered children

# of actual children's participants

# of books read by children (if you used minutes or hours, you can send that but I'd prefer it in # of books if possible)

# of children's programs offered   ---------------  found on Survey Monkey survey

# of children's attendees at programs --------- found on Survey Monkey survey

# of registered teens

# of actual teens who participated

# of books read by teens (if you used minutes or hours, you can send that but I'd prefer it in # of books if possible)

# of teen programs offered ---------- found on Survey Monkey survey

# of teen attendees at programs ----- found on Survey Monkey survey

# of registered adults (if you did an adult program)

# of actual adults who participated

# of books read by adults

# of adult programs offered specifically for summer reading program ----- found on Survey Monkey survey

# of adults who attended these programs ------- found on Survey Monkey survey

I hope this makes it a bit clearer. If you have any questions, just e-mail me at ...@njstatelib.org">sraw...@njstatelib.org.

Thank you!
