I agree with Kathleen. When I get disheartened I remind myself that 3-5 at a program is good....25-50 is amazing and over that is just incredible. What I've found is as long as communication lines are open (meaning you ask what the teens like or hate) you'll be ok, but we will usually have to fight with other life things...like is there a party in town, are the "cool kids" dissing it or coming, etc. Keep your spirits up and make sure that those hosting teen events actually LIKE teens...it'll be fine. Lina, nine teens per program actually sounds like fairly good teen program attendance to me! Teen programs simply aren't going to draw the kinds of numbers that programs for young children draw, for various reasons (teens are too big for parents to force them to go to the library, teens have many other activities going on, including summer jobs, that compete with library programs, young teens without drivers' licenses are dependent on others for transportation). I found that my best attended programs were in July, on Saturday afternoons. June is too busy, with school ending late in the month, graduation ceremonies, etc., and in August, many teens are away on vacation with their families. I have had craft programs, like tie-dye and candy bento boxes, on weekday afternoons and had good attendance. My big program for the summer is a 7 pm-midnight lockin for participants in the teen summer reading program. I also get fairly good attendance at videogaming programs.

My next question concerns teen programs. Branches reported that teen programs were not well attended and they donât want to offer them in the future. But in looking at our statistics, a total of 28 programs were held with a total attendance of 248 teens. I realize that some programs were more well attended than others, but considering that we had a total of 148 teens registered for the summer reading program system wide, the program attendance figures donât seem bad, averaging almost nine teens per program. What do you consider to be successful attendance at a teen program? Do you find that attendance is better in the evening than during the daytime? What types of programs have been the most popular?
