Kathleen, thanks for your input. I'd like to do a tie-dye program but not all of our branches have meeting rooms so that would be out in some locations due to the mess factor. Other craft programs have been hit or miss, with some drawing maybe a half-dozen kids, which I think is a good number for that age. Saturday afternoon programming would probably go over like a lead balloon with the staff. Probably the most popular program this summer was a program where teens learned the basics of playing acoustic guitar. A follow-up program is being offered later this fall.

Lina, nine teens per program actually sounds like fairly good teen program attendance to me! Teen programs simply aren't going to draw the kinds of numbers that programs for young children draw, for various reasons (teens are too big for parents to force them to go to the library, teens have many other activities going on, including summer jobs, that compete with library programs, young teens without drivers' licenses are dependent on others for transportation). I found that my best attended programs were in July, on Saturday afternoons. June is too busy, with school ending late in the month, graduation ceremonies, etc., and in August, many teens are away on vacation with their families. I have had craft programs, like tie-dye and candy bento boxes, on weekday afternoons and had good attendance. My big program for the summer is a 7 pm-midnight lockin for participants in the teen summer reading program. I also get fairly good attendance at videogaming programs.
