I like your idea Lisa to provide the weekly contest with clues to guess the book. Giving them a reason to check in weekly is likely to help them keep interest in the library's summer reading program throughout the summer, beyond signing up. I am thinking that in our library we should to weekly prize drawings for giveaways, stuff from local businesses, for those turning in a ticket each week, perhaps in addition to a chance to win a final prize for getting to a certain marker in hours read. I'd also like to mention that organizing and providing a volunteer program that runs through the summer staffing teens is a great what to both offer a "teen program", bring in #'s, and provide teens with a community service opportunity and chance to gain work experience. Some of our teens are great readers but they don't want to sign up for the summer reading program. Something we have done for the last two summers that was quite popular was a contest where each week we provided a clue to a book and the teens had to provide the title and author of the book. Correct responses were entered into a drawing for a prize drawn at the end of the program. This year on the first day of summer reading a young man saw the info about the contest and was excited about that but was reluctant to sign up for summer reading because he thought he would have to attend other programs or be at the library at certain times, etc.

I hate to say it but for many many teens it is just not cool to go to the library, except for mandatory research, which unfortunately many parents do for them. I can't get them in at my branch no matter what.

Lina, nine teens per program actually sounds like fairly good teen program attendance to me! Teen programs simply aren't going to draw the kinds of numbers that programs for young children draw, for various reasons (teens are too big for parents to force them to go to the library, teens have many other activities going on, including summer jobs, that compete with library programs, young teens without drivers' licenses are dependent on others for transportation). I found that my best attended programs were in July, on Saturday afternoons. June is too busy, with school ending late in the month, graduation ceremonies, etc., and in August, many teens are away on vacation with their families. I have had craft programs, like tie-dye and candy bento boxes, on weekday afternoons and had good attendance. My big program for the summer is a 7 pm-midnight lockin for participants in the teen summer reading program. I also get fairly good attendance at videogaming programs.

My next question concerns teen programs. Branches reported that teen programs were not well attended and they don't want to offer them in the future. But in looking at our statistics, a total of 28 programs were held with a total attendance of 248 teens. I realize that some programs were more well attended than others, but considering that we had a total of 148 teens registered for the summer reading program system wide, the program attendance figures don't seem bad, averaging almost nine teens per program. What do you consider to be successful attendance at a teen program? Do you find that attendance is better in the evening than during the daytime? What types of programs have been the most popular?
