Supervising Librarian, Children’s Services Department

Description:

Under supervision of the Associate Director, the Supervising Librarian is responsible for the development and coordination of Children’s Services within Piscataway Public Library, including on-site library service at the Kennedy and Westergard Branches, virtual service via the Library’s web site and other online platforms, and outreach services at various community locations.

About Piscataway Public Library:

Piscataway Township is located in Middlesex County, across the river from the Rutgers University New Brunswick campus, and near the center of Einstein’s Alley - central New Jersey’s research and technology corridor. Boasting a richly diverse population of over 58,000, Piscataway is the home of several large corporate residents, including Johnson & Johnson, Colgate-Palmolive, and IEEE. Piscataway was recently ranked among the top ten most diverse towns in New Jersey, with significant non-white populations including African-American (20%), Asian (36%), and Hispanic (12%).

Responsibilities:

  • Supervising Children’s Department staff, including scheduling, training, mentoring, and assigning tasks to department personnel, maintaining staff morale, and reviewing workflow and procedures to ensure maximum quality and efficiency.

  • Providing timely and objective feedback to Children’s Department staff.

  • Coordinating collection development within the department for all formats in response to community needs, and participating in ordering specific print and non-print collections.

  • Planning, coordinating, and participating in the development and execution of a variety of programs for children both in-house and at outreach sites.

  • Developing long and short-term goals related to Children’s Services as a standing member of the strategic planning committee.

  • Submitting monthly and annual reports on the progress of objectives, reference and programming statistics, and trends in the department.

  • Preparing and justifying the annual budget request to be consistent with strategic planning objectives.

  • Setting budget priorities and monitoring expenditures within the Children’s Department.

  • Working with appropriate library staff to seek and implement grant funding for both new and continuing projects related to Children’s Services.

  • Liaising with elementary schools and relevant community organizations.


Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA accredited program.

  • NJ Professional Librarian’s certificate issued by the NJ Department of Education

  • At least two years of post MLS experience in the specialized field of Children’s Services

  • Demonstrated experience in the following areas: flexibility, initiative, teamwork and customer service

  • Ability to communicate clearly, courteously and effectively with library patrons and staff

  • Continuing education to update professional skills via workshops and online webinars

  • Active participation in professional library associations

Schedule:

The schedule for this position is 35 hours per week, including a regular evening, and some Saturday and Sunday coverage on a rotating basis.

Compensation:

This is a full-time salaried exempt level position. Annual salary is $74,636. Piscataway Public Library offers an excellent benefits package including generous paid leave, health and dental, PERS, and a commitment to staff training and development.
