F/T Librarian I, Youth Services

Description:

The Scotch Plains Public Library is seeking a full-time Youth Services Librarian. This position is available immediately. In addition to being comfortable working with younger children, our ideal candidate is innovative and passionate about teen services. Public desk hours may include working at the adult and children services desks.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide expert reference service to youth, caregivers, educators, and the general public
  • Assist library patrons to search the catalog, review databases, and use other online resources
  • Run regularly scheduled programs for middle and high school students
  • Run emerging technology and maker related workshops for middle and high school students
  • Maintain Young Adult collection through ordering new materials, cataloging, and weeding
  • Develop and maintain a working relationship with school administrators and media specialists through outreach
  • Recruit, train, and supervise teen volunteers
  • Promote and provide reader’s advisory services
  • Work collaboratively to evaluate new products and services
  • Write and design publicity, including press releases, event flyers, and electronic newsletters
  • Use web-based applications such as Evernote, Survey Monkey, Wordpress, and Pinterest
  • Work both independently and in a collaborative environment
  • Represent the library at community events
  • Readily undertake other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

The candidate must have a Master's degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited institution and a NJ Professional Librarian’s Certificate. The applicant must comply with the New Jersey First Act.


1-year experience as a professional librarian preferred. Previous job experience working with middle school students in some capacity is highly desired.

HOURS:  35 hours per week, including one evening and alternating Saturdays.


SALARY:   Salary is commensurate with experience.
