Hello, Sharon

We wanted to thank you for participating in the Virtual Library Comic Convention (VLCC) live events on July 30th. Your participation means a lot. In these current times it is easy to feel separate from one another, but shared and intersecting passions are everywhere and will always find a way to bring us together.

We are grateful to the publishers who made eBooks available in the program this summer: Capstone Publishing, Tidal Wave Publishing, and the San Jose Public Library, whose Graphic Novel archive we were also able to feature in one of the VLCC sessions. These partners made thousands of comics available to people across 11 states, supporting libraries as they have grappled with closing buildings and an increased need to deliver robust digital and remote services to patrons during a crisis.

We are also grateful to all the talented individuals who donated their time on our VLCC live event sessions. The sessions were creative and will serve as a treasure trove of information and programming support that libraries can use year-round. Below you will find links to recordings of the sessions, which we encourage you to share widely, along with links to learn more about the work our panelists are doing year-round.

Creating a Successful and Relevant Digital Community Engagement Initiative in Your Library: Graphic Novel Making Contest Toolkit from the San Jose Public Library (SJPL)

Watch the recording

This has always been one of our favorite projects and it was so outstanding to make it a part of this VLCC event. We learned even more about how the folks at SJPL make this magic happen and any library trying to adapt to the virtual world can gain inspiration from how they took this program online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The SJPL crew also recommends these books to help you conceive and launch a graphic novel making program:

  • 50 Fandom Programs: Planning Festivals and Events for Tweens, Teens, and Adults (978-0838915523)

Comic Book Art 101: Demonstrations, Tips, and Tricks of the Trade

Watch the recording

This session provides a unique approach to orienting people of all ages to feel comfortable putting pen to paper when it comes to comic book art. With different approaches to arrive at the same place, Gordon and Darren are able to help you envision your own art and help inspire creativity in others.

  • Visit artist Gordon Purcell’s Wikipedia page. Gordon so graciously picked out a few of his favorite projects and books to share with you, so check them out: Justice League Unlimited: Galactic Justice (ISBN 978-1-77950-673-3), Star Trek Year Four (ISBN 978-160010279-0), The Trojan Horse (ISBN 0-8225-3085-6)
  • Darren Davis of Tidal Wave Comics is an old friend and we were happy to have him as a part of our VLCC program. Check out the work he is doing at Tidal Wave and look for his comics on BiblioBoard Library and other channels.
