The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office is seeking library workers to serve as peer reviewers for applications for Great Stories Club: “Deeper Than Our Skins” and “Finding Your Voice” series grants. Applications are due by Wednesday, February 15, 2023.
About the Great Stories Club
The ALA Great Stories Club is a thematic reading and discussion program that engages teens who are facing difficult challenges through literature-based library outreach programs. The “Deeper Than Our Skins” and “Finding Your Voice” series will feature books that explore questions of race, equity, identity, and history. Implementation of both series is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Up to 100 grants will be awarded to eligible institutions around the country to support program implementation using one of the two themes. Up to 50 libraries will be selected to receive a "Deeper Than Our Skins" grant, and up to 50 libraries will be selected to receive a "Finding Your Voice" grant.
Participating libraries will work with small groups of approximately 10 teens; provide up to four theme-related books for each participant to keep as their own; and convene opportunities for exploration and discussion of relevant humanities content among peers. Book discussions will be led by an experienced programming librarian, often in cooperation with staff from a partner organization or department, such as teachers and counselors.
About the Opportunity
Application reviewers will be asked to read and review up to 20 applications between March 22, 2023 and April 7, 2023. Respondents will be notified prior to the review window if they are selected and will receive application review instructions, along with a link to access the online applications assigned to them.
Current ALA membership is necessary in order to serve as a peer reviewer for this grant application. Note that if you serve as a reviewer, your library may not submit an application for the Great Stories Club: “Deeper Than Our Skins” and “Finding Your Voice” grant opportunity.
Application reviewers will receive an honorarium of $150 for their work. In addition, serving as a peer reviewer on a national exhibition offering is an excellent professional development and member service opportunity that can be added to your resume or C.V.
Applications must be submitted electronically using the online peer reviewer application form on ALA Apply by Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at 11:59 PM Central Time: https://www.grantinterface.com/Home/Logon?urlkey=AMALA
The peer reviewer application is available through ALA Apply, our grants management system. To create an account, you can click on "Create New Account" on the login page and follow the prompts. Please note this account is separate from your ALA Member account. Once you are logged in, you will want to look for the "ALA Public Programs Office Peer Reviewer Application".
