Hi to the List,

I am a new poster here. My name is Amy and I have been currently on a two year hiatus from the field. I have an MLS from Rutgers and I have worked in the youth services sector of the public library (in the state of NJ) for close to a decade prior to my leave. This autumn I am looking forward to returning to my career on a part-time basis. I plan to get my resume reviewed and critiqued and ready to go. I have also tried to keep current as much as possible. I have been a member of NJLA and I am sure, like many of you, I have read that the NJ state budget is in poor shape and that there have been a lot of cutbacks in municipalities resulting in layoffs and early retirement incentives, etc. etc. The past few weeks I have been looking at the job posts and there hasnt been much. I am not too thrilled to be looking for work at this point in time(economically) and I am hoping that I won't be banging my head against the proverbial wall when I start applying for jobs this fall. Since I basically have been on the outside of things for the past two years I wanted to know if anyone can give me any insight into what is actually happening in the job market for public librarians at this point? I had heard that there were a lot of part-time positions available, but I don't see that many actually posted. I am aware that some libraries use librarians to work on a substitute basis. Is this something you would recommend for someone who is looking to break back into the field? Do hiring managers often look at substitute librarians as viable candidates when jobs do open up? Lastly, I remember in my hometown library that they had a separate staff from the regular workweek staff. Are there many opportunities out there for weekend staff? Again, any advice will be greatly appreciated. Enjoy the summer.
