Hi!

My library doesn't have it's own page (and we don't have a blog), rather, I have my own MySpace page and use it almost exclusively to advertise library programs/books, etc.  I chose to go with MySpace because that's what the great majority of my teens use.  I am toying with the idea of building a Facebook page since most of my "graduates" that are now in college are using it instead of MySpace, but MySpace has become such an important marketing tool for me that I definitely wouldn't give it up.

I haven't really had to advertise much, but I did print up little slips that say "Be My Friend!" and list my MySpace url.  Word of mouth has been the best advertisement.  (Most of my "friends" are teens or teen authors or teen librarians, which is cool.)

I have found MySpace invaluable for promoting programs especially.  A few days before a program, I post it in the box at the top of the page [ie "Kimberly's next program is the Teen Advisory Council..."], then, usually the day before or day of a big program, I post a bulletin, and if it's REALLY big like an author event, I send individual messages.

Any questions, let me know.  And if anyone wants to friend me, I can be found at http://www.myspace.com/kimberlyplibrarian.  : )

Subject: [njyac] Facebook/Myspace Profile

Please excuse any cross postings.

I have introduced the idea of creating a facebook profile for the young adult section at my library, but need to come up with figures and examples from other libraries. SO...I have a few questions for the collective brains.

1).  Which site does your library use?  Is it dependent upon which sites your YAs use?  Does your library have a blog?

2).  How did you advertise your site?

3).  How well does it work for promoting your programs?

4).  Have you promoted other library online services, such as the library’s website, databases, or NextReads newsletters in the links on your page?

Any information would be helpful, and if you could, please send the information directly to me, at aay...@summitlibrary.org<...@summitlibrary.org">mailto:aay...@summitlibrary.org>

Thanks in advance.
