How it works:
Typically, it’s best to save at least 1.5 hours for each library or school presentation. The talk is perfect for “kids” of all ages – from pre-K up to retired adults. For library presentations, it’s best to advertise the talks for children AND adults. The subject draws a diverse audience which makes it fun and interesting for all! On my website at www.mymusher.com, you can find a list of places where I’ve done talks over the last 9 years.
In 2009, I am keeping my talk prices the same as what I’ve charged the last 3 years. I charge $500 per talk. If you would like an entire day (unlimited talks), I charge $1000 per day. Unfortunately, because of the high and unpredictable cost of gas, next year I will be adding a travel fee onto this normal price. I will be on the road for four months giving talks across the country, leaving my home in Helena, Montana in January. In early December when I can estimate the upcoming price of gas for the winter/spring, I will tally up my miles and split the approximate cost of gas between all of the talks. I reserve and pay for my own hotel rooms. I travel in my small, economical Toyota Rav with two dogs, Borage and Jigs, in the back seat, and my dog sled, mushing clothing, and gear stashed in a travel carrier on top! Because I usually have a several talks a day, the shared fee will be reasonable.
If you know of any other school or library in your area that might be interested, PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD! I can do several talks in one day. I often do school talks during the day and local public library talks in the evening. Usually, the students love the talk AND Borage so much that they often bring their parents and friends back to the library in the evening for more! My school and library talks are different.
I am available for media interviews as needed to promote the talks.
Right now, I am gathering a list of those schools and libraries who would like to book talks. There are some states that I return to every year (TEXAS), but other states are a little off the beaten path. Borage and I would love to visit all 50 states! If I can get at least 10 talks in your state, I should be able to afford to come (some states like Hawaii might require a few more!). So, once again, please spread the word to schools and libraries in your area. It will make the chances better that I can put you on my route plus make the travel fee less for all!
As for Texas talks, I will be creating a list of schools who want talks and then in early December making the final travel schedule. Obviously, I can’t zigzag all over the state so I will create a loop to fit every interested school/library into the route. IF YOU WANT TO BE ON THE LIST, PLEASE TELL ME HOW MANY VISITS YOU WANT AND YOUR PREFERRED TIME. I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHEN YOUR TAKS AND SPRING BREAK WILL BE SO I CAN AVOID THOSE DATES. The last 3 years, mid-February to mid-March has worked well for most schools.
