We decided not the work with Marvel Comics at this time. The program would require that we get sponsors. We do not have the time or resources to devote to doing that right now.
I appreciate everyone's input concerning this proposal. If we do decide to work with Marvel in the future, I'll let you know.

Sharon, What was the outcome of this? I am still putting programs in place for the summer so I just want to make sure that I didn't overlook anything. Lisa
NJYAC ...@njstatelib.org">srawlins@njstatelib.org 6/9/2008 9:54 AM >>> Hi Everyone,
I have a question to pose to all of you working with middle school aged kids and up.
Marvel Comics approached the NJ State Library asking whether they can use the Super Librarian comic character in one of their single issue comic books to distribute in NJ schools and libraries.
They have a separate in-house education resources division called Cover Concepts that uses a company's brand (i.e. Jeep or The Home Depot or in this case, Super Librarian) in their materials to add educational value to the in-school environment. They propose to use Super Librarian and one of their existing superheroes (Spiderman, Hulk, Fantastic Four, etc.) to create a comic.
Nancy Dowd and I are trying to come up with a program idea that would get the schools and public libraries involved with Marvel's proposition. We might have the kids vote on which Marvel superhero to include with Super Librarian in a comic and then when we distribute the comic books have them rate the drawing and the story plot - just to show us they read it.
We need to know if you think the kids will be enthusiastic about getting involved in something like this and if doing something with Marvel is a worthwhile idea. We don't know if the kids even cared that much about the Super Librarian comic that the State Library created so we want to make sure the kids would go for this before we finalize anything. We think that this won't happen until 2009 but we need to start discussing the details now.
Would you please respond to this message and just let me know if it's a worthwhile idea. I don't necessarily need any program ideas, just whether you think the kids will initially go for it. It could tie in nicely with the art theme for the 2009 Summer Reading Program.
Thank you!
