Hello all,
I am writing to recommend a speaker for parents.
We have had Olen Kalkus speak twice in the 5 years our
“new” building has been open, and what he says has opened my eyes
and changed the way I react to young people in the library. He has never
charged us anything for the program but he does bring a power point
presentation and would like to be able to use your computer and screen.
One thing not mentioned below is that while the
Princeton Academy is a boys school (grades Junior Kindergarten to 8),
Mr Kalkus has also been headmaster of an all girls school and has
children of both genders.

Here is the blurb that his contact, Tom Von Oehsen,
has sent me:
Boys
and Girls Learn Differently
Olen
Kalkus, founding Headmaster of Princeton Academy, discusses the latest research
on boys’ development. Learn why boys are disengaging from schooling
worldwide.
Recently
a great deal of research into brain-based gender differences in learning has
emerged. The assumption that co-educational environments are the best
environments for all children in all grades is coming into question in light of
this emerging research and the declining level of academic and co-curricular
achievement of males nationwide. Books such as Boys and Girls Learn
Differently by Michael Gurian, and Why Gender Matters by Leonard
Sax, present new research findings in the field of gender-based brain
development that support gender-based approaches towards educating
children. Mr. Kalkus will share some of the more compelling findings from
this research and their implication for educating children in the twenty-first
century.
