Phineas Gage: A Gruesome But True Story About Brain Science by John
Fleischman is nonfiction, but would certainly fit the bill. It's not too
long, written in easy-to-understand language, but VERY interesting and really
gross.
Hope this helps!

How about The Radioactive Boy Scout by Ken Silverstein? It is the story of
David
Hahn, the Michigan teenager who built a nuclear breeder reactor in his backyard
in
1994, endangering the residents of his Michigan hometown and raising the ire of
the
federal government.
