Hi Sharon,
I know we have not participated in the summer reading program in the past however, I am new and definitely plan on doing it this summer. If you happen to have anything extra that you can send me to promote the summer reading program I would so appreciate it.

Hi Fran (and everyone!),

Yes, all public libraries in NJ that sent in their statistics from last summer’s reading program will receive the children’s banner, children’s and teen posters, and children’s and teen bookmarks. This information was included in the cover letter I sent out to all libraries with their summer reading manuals. Llibraries are just starting to receive these materials now. They are being shipped directly from Upstart/Highsmith. If you are part of a county library system, all the materials are being shipped to the main library to be distributed to the branches.

Best,

Subject: [njyac] Emerging technologies report

 FYI,

Sharon Rawlins, Youth Services Consultant, NJ State Library

The 2011 Horizons Report is out. Each year, the Horizon Report introduces six emerging technologies or practices that are likely to enter mainstream use within the next five years. It focuses on technology trends in higher education, but is valuable reading for librarians in all types of institutions.

It is 40 pages. Once you've read the report -- or the 6-page summary-- share it and discuss these technology trends.

  • Electronic books, mobiles:  Time-to-Adoption: <1 year
  • Augmented reality, game-based learning:  Time-to-Adoption: 2-3 years
  • Gesture-based computing, learning analytics:  Time-to-Adoption: 4-5 years

The report is produced by the New Media Consortium and EDUCAUSE.

Slideshare presentation of Horizons Report:

http://www.slideshare.net/dreig/2011-horizonreport

Who to share with?  School leadership, library and technology teams, science teachers and students.  Share the link, but also print a few copies to hand to colleagues, students, board members, book and computer clubs. The report focuses on university uses of technology, so consider developing your organization's own version.

Best wishes.
