Posting for Judy Freeman,
who many of you know! :) Carol Levin
Hi Everyone--
Somehow, the year has rolled around again and my 27th Annual
Winners! Conference across scenic New Jersey begins a mere 5
weeks from today! This year's all-day seminar will feature my
tour of the 100+ Best Children's Books of 2010; breakfast AND a
fabulous lunch, including delicious desserts I will try (without
apparent success) not to eat; the world's best handbook; free
galleys and door prizes; and a chance to network with lots of
other leading teachers and librarians!
Owl Books will be there again this year, carrying virtually all
the books I'll be talking about so you can purge yourself of
unneeded cash and pick up books to use with your kids the next
day. (There will also be plenty of Libraries Unlimited and
Linworth professional titles for sale, too.)
This year, when every politician is telling us how greedy and
incompetent we educators are, it will be a relief to take a day
off from the venomous rhetoric and remember what's so incredibly
fun and satisfying about what we do: connecting children with
books, turning kids into lifelong readers and
learners, and catching up on the most memorable recent
children's books. I've been working on my all-new program and
PowerPoint all year, and think you're going to have a blast with
this past year's books that I think no teacher or librarian
should be without. Can't afford Canyon Ranch? Think of this as
our own Spa Sabbatical Day.
I'm so hoping you'll be able to get the day off to join us. I
know how hard it's been for some of you to get professional days
this year. Do tell your children's book-loving friends and
colleagues about this book- and idea-packed day, as not everyone
is on our mailing list. I look forward to Winners! every
year--it's one big, friendly reunion and book party. For those
of you who have been to my BER seminars, it's like that, and
then some.
And if you can't go yourself, as the next best thing,
you can always buy yourself a copy of the gorgeous and totally
brand new 250-page conference handout--The
Winners! Handbook: A Closer Look at Judy Freeman's Top-Rated
Children's Books of 2010--which is coming out
from my wonderful publisher, Libraries Unlimited (www.LU.com) in
May. (Follett, B&T, and Amazon, etc., will all have it,
too.) As always, this all-new book is stuffed full of lesson
plans, worksheets, 6 Reader's Theater scripts, songs, stories,
websites, and mini essays about each of my 101 favorite
children's books of 2010. I write each new handbook, since 2006,
to be a yearly update to Books Kids Will Sit
Still For 3 (Libraries Unlimited, 2006).
