We have the following books in our collection:
The Berenstain Bears Lose a Friend by Stan & Jan Berenstain –
Sister Bear and family deal with the death of Sister’s goldfish
The Accident by Carol Carrick – About a boy whose dog is
hit by a truck and killed
Saying Goodbye to Lulu by Corinne Demas – About a girl
dealing with the death of her dog Lulu
Goodbye, Mousie by Robie Harris – about a boy dealing with
the death of his pet mouse
The Bug Cemetery by Frances Hill - Neighborhood children
imaginatively stage funerals for dead bugs, but they experience real sadness
following the death of a pet.
Alfie and the Birthday Surprise by Shirley Hughes - The death of
Bob's cat prompts his friends and family to give him a surprise birthday party
and a very special present.
A Special Place for Charlee: A Child’s Companion through
pet loss by Karen Cannon
Hope some of these are helpful,

Hi my fellow smartypants librarians,
Does anyone have suggestions on good books dealing with the topic of sudden
death of a pet, for kids? I had a patron come in searching for something,
and most of the materials we have, or other libraries have, deal with old age
death...she was looking more for a sudden, unexpected thing.
We have materials on sudden death of people, for children, but the patron was
afraid the child would get more upset and start envisioning death of his
parents, etc.
I'm searching on Amazon and Baker and Taylor at the moment, but if anyone has
any suggestions - whether it's adult nonfiction books on how to explain it to a
child, or juv. fiction books, etc. - it would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance,
Chrissy
