Hello, all
I JUST got hired as a school librarian in a wonderful school district up here in Maine. 2 schools, so I will be splitting my time between the 2.
One school requires that I teach library skills to 6 - 8 graders in 3 week modules. I think I see them again second semester for three weeks.
As many of you know, my background is in a public library in Highland Park, NJ so this is quite new for me.
All I have are two very messy libraries. I have been in meetings and literally cleaning/dusting/trashing for the past week (and that's just the front desk). The collections are nice, no complaints there yet. But I have no lesson plans, no guidelines for assessment, nothing. I have a helpful and understanding supervisor who has 3 libraries of her own to get
ready. It is a pass/fail class so I do have to come up with a way to grade them and assess whether they learned the skills.
I am in a bit of a panic. No one will be harsh with me - but me. They understand my predicament but I really want to do well by the kids.
If any of you are aware of some great resources I would really appreciate it. Even if you just have a great idea for a first meeting ice breaker it would be helpful.
I will be sure and share what worked well if you are interested. I appreciate any advice you can provide.
I know many of you are gearing up for your own school years. I wish you all the best and hope the rest of you had a bang up summer reading program!
NJ Librarians Rock. I have the t-shirt to prove it.
