As the summer dust settles and we all gear up for a new school year filled with new students, new after-school crowds, and a whole new set of minds, now is our opportunity to promote some great FUN reading material! Yes, we know that Teen Read Week is approaching in October, and that means promoting and voting for the Teens' Top Ten, but it's also a great time to highlight some of the titles on the
Garden State Teen Book Award nomination list. Votes for the GSTBA need to be submitted by January, so start your creative thinking today!
To get started, contact teachers, librarians, and local school systems to make sure that they have the link to the voting site, or print copies of the GSTBA 2012 ballot. Invite them to submit votes themselves or through their local library. The fiction and nonfiction titles on these lists are great to use as recommended classroom and assignment reading for teachers looking to flush out their lesson plans.
Create displays in classrooms and public libraries highlighting both the nomination titles as well as the VOTING. If you don't have copies of all the titles in stock, print out book covers in color with a "Request Me!" note. Use GSTBA titles for upcoming book discussion groups, both with teen groups as well as for groups with fellow teachers and librarians to help get your colleagues excited. Booktalk some of your favorites on the list and encourage teen readers to let you know which titles they loved. Invite your teens to submit reviews of their favorites to post on your library's blog or in your building. Create bookmarks of the GSTBA titles to sneak into the books when they're checked out.
Did you know? Garden State Teen Book Awards on FACEBOOK: There are only 21 fans so far, so connect to us through your libraries, yourself, and your teens! (Maybe the 100th fan will even win a prize!) Teens can VOTE directly through this Facebook page by
"liking" the images of the book covers found in the photo albums. Can it get any easier?!?!
We look forward to seeing you all at the YA Section's first meeting of the 2011-2012 year on Friday, September 23 at the
South Brunswick Public Library. All are welcome!
