Hi everyone,
I wanted to know what other librarians do during storytime when they have an aggressive child who causes major disruptions.
This child is about two and a half (only child) and seems to have it out for the other children in storytime, it doesn't matter what we are doing he will push children, bite children, grab children, or bang on furniture during storytime. This happens while we listen to stories, finger plays, rhymes, felt plays, he is doing something constantly.
It was pretty bad last time because he seemed to be displaying disruptive behavior every other minute. The parent who brings him in doesn't do anything she just grabs him and holds him for a moment and then puts him down. I had about six or seven parents/guardians complain last week because of this child. Just a side note other parents disciplined this child by saying to the child "No, you do not hit" in a stern voice. I saw some of his behavior but as you all know it can be hard with 35 adults and children in the room.
I was thinking for next week of just making a blanket statement that last week we had some disruptions and if your child becomes aggressive please step out and take a moment to calm them down, I may also ask you to step out for a moment if I feel that the child is displaying aggressive or disruptive behavior.
Any other tips? Experiences?
I've never really had a child so aggressive in any of my programs, also the parent seems very passive about the disruptive behavior and doesn't say anything to her child or other parents (an apology for her child pushing their child or reprimand).
Other parents who complained felt that they couldn't enjoy the program because of this child or steered clear of him and stayed to one side of the room.
I want this child to enjoy the program but I don't want him hurting other kids.
