 Hi, again,

I was asked how I incorporated the digital app into my storytelling program, so I thought I would share to the list.

The program was held in our children's program room for a group of approximately 38 parents and children.  As always in my programs, I start with the stories for the youngest children and move gradually into longer stories for older (school-aged) children.  Parents are invited to step outside the room with their little ones once they've had enough.

After a few rhymes and a traditional telling of a story, I brought out the story bag that I had demonstrated at the summer reading workshops and had the children help "tell" a story that we made up on the spot, taking turns pulling things from the bag that were incorporated into the story using their ideas.  (Our story turned out to be about a fairy with wrinkled wings - I see possibilities there!).

After that, I told a slightly longer story for the school-aged children and parents who were left, and we ended with the digital storytelling - no fancy equipment, just my iPad, which I held as I would hold a book.

I explained to the parents that librarians get together to discuss new things and that some were starting to do this and we wanted to give it a try here as an experiment.  It was well received by all present.

The Pigeon app invites the children to make selections that will be used in the story (sort of like mad libs), so some were chosen by the children themselves and some we voted on.  There were about a dozen children left at this point, so the group was a good size for this activity.  The illustrations on this app are large and clear, so it was easy for the children to see even though it wasn't projected to a larger screen.  I liked that the focus was on the librarian and the story rather than on a monitor or screen.

The children were excited to see the story come to life with their suggested input, and we all joined in whenever the pigeon was told, "NOoooooo!"

As the program ended, I shared with parents how many different kinds of stories we had experienced that night, from rhymes, traditional folk tales, picture books retold, making up our own story, and digital storytelling.

I hope that gives a clear picture to any who were curious.  Thanks for asking the question, Laura, and thanks to those who have already made suggestions.  I'd love to hear more.

Best,

Hi Anne,

I do not have any recommendations. However, I am curious. How did you incorporate the app into your storytelling program?

Thanks,
Laura

 Hi, everyone,

I attended two programs recently about incorporating "digital storytelling" into library programs and tried it for the first time last night at the end of my traditional storytelling program.  The kids loved it!

The only app I've purchased so far is Mo Willems "Don't Let the Pigeon Run This App" and it is worth every cent.

What I like about it from a storytellers' perspective and for early literacy development is that:
1) It is based on a book that can be checked out.
2) It takes the book beyond the page in a way that is interactive and helps to develop imagination, vocabulary, decision making, sequence, and other literacy skills.
3) The illustrations were based on the original illustrations in the books.
4) It keeps the focus on the story and not on playing a game.

I think this app is brilliant and would love to find more that meet this criteria.  I want to avoid apps that are more like games, even when based on a book, or apps that were illustrated in a more generic, cartoon style instead of being the work of a known children's book illustrator.  (There is room for these types of apps, but it isn't what I need for this program).

Can you help?  If you know of apps that meet my criteria, will you post them or send them to me?  It will save me hours of searching.

Thanks,
