Cross posted to several lists!!

So I follow quite a few library list-servs and I've heard stories like the one below a number of times this summer. I was thinking of putting together a couple of blog entries with easy program ideas for just this situation. The performer doesn't show up, the awesome librarian (or aide) has a backup program he/she can whip out and keep everyone entertained with, people still leave happy, and you can tar and feather the performer at your convenience later.

I have 2 questions for you the collective brain:
1) Does the idea of having a backup plan have merit, or would you just rather send the patrons away?
2) What easy/fun/inexpensive program ideas do you think would work in this situation? I'd love to have a couple of ideas for each age group.

As a side note, for libraries that have had this happen, please consider checking out the performers/programs that we offer on our website www.unboundbooking.com In the 5 years (and 60+ performers) that we've been doing this, we've only had performers not show up twice. In both instances, we then provided the library with a free program.

Please email replies to me off list at ...@gmail.com" target="_blank">unbo...@gmail.com

Thanks!

We had [Performer Name Removed] this week and were very disappointed.  He forgot about the booking entirely.  When I contacted him on his cell phone that morning to remind him, he told me I had the wrong date, only to agree once I told him I was looking at his invoice.  He arrived 15 minutes after the show was to begin (with over restless 100 people in a rented space), skipped using his sound system because he had no time to set it up and spent several minutes rumaging around his trunk between magic tricks looking for (and counting!) cards and props. He had a live rabbit that he assured me would stay on stage, but he brought it to the door and let each child handle it before exiting.
