While I understand everyone’s wish to try to help other libraries, I think we need to hold off for now. I sent this message out in hopes that individual libraries might decide on their own whether to apply if they feel they need to, not necessarily as a way for everyone to help other libraries.  We don’t know the extent of the need for books in public libraries yet.

Public libraries have been asked to fill out an online form at http://www.njstatelib.org/news/2012/nov/01/hurricane_sandys_effect_on_nj_libraries

that’s available on the State Library’s website indicating whether they are open, have internet, etc. and the only way we can tell which libraries were severely damaged at this point are if they

indicated that they are closed “indefinitely.”

I think this is a wonderful idea Anne. Sharon, do we have an idea of how hard any libraries were hit with this storm?

This might be an ideal opportunity for any of the libraries in the shore communities.  Were any damaged by the storm?  If help is needed with the application process, I can help, and I'm sure others will volunteer to help also.

FYI,

The Association for Library Service to Children’s Bookapalooza Grant Program

Each year the ALSC office receives almost 3,000 newly published books, videos, audio books, and recordings from children’s trade publishers. The materials are primarily for children age birth through fourteen and are submitted to the ALSC award and media evaluation selection committees for award and notables consideration.  At the end of the year, ALSC will select three libraries to receive a Bookapalooza collection of these materials. This is a competitive program and the deadline for applications is December 1, 2012. You can find more information about the criteria and application process here: http://www.ala.org/alsc/bookapalooza-program

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
