Position Open: Head of Youth Services Department-Full Time

The Rockaway Township Free Public Library, one of the most active libraries in Morris County, announces an opening for a person to be Head of our extremely busy and beloved Youth Services Department.

Applicants must enjoy working with children who range in age from birth to teens, and excel at building rapport with parents or caregivers. The successful applicant must be creative, innovative, visionary and able to function well in a team environment.

This position is provisional pending successful completion of the Open Competitive Exam with the Civil Service Commission. There is a residency requirement: successful candidates must live in Morris County, counties contiguous to Morris or be willing to relocate.

Qualifications include an MLS or an MLIS degree from an ALA accredited graduate school, eligibility to apply for a New Jersey Librarian’s Certificate, and five years of professional service in Children’s Services, demonstrating management and supervisory skills. Additional skills required: basic budgeting, computer proficiency, an outstanding ability to communicate verbally and in writing, and a sense of humor. Grant-writing a plus.

Responsibilities include (under the Supervision of the Library Director) collection development, programming, publicity, community outreach, liaise with schools and teachers, provide readers’ advisory service, reference, maintenance of the physical appearance of the area and supervision of full and part time staff, including two part-time  Children’s Librarians and the Teen Librarian.

The person chosen would also be responsible for staffing the Adult Reference Desk one Saturday out of four (full day), one Sunday out of four (half day) and one night a week.
