Please excuse cross postings
FYI,
I received this message from Alissa Lange from NIEER. A session on her partnership with New Brunswick PL was presented by Chelsea Woods at the Youth Services Forum
in October, 2015 called STEAM for the Littlest Ones. Alissa asked me to forward this message to all public librarians who are working with preschoolers to see if any of you are interested in doing this
program in your library this summer. There will be no cost to you to do it. Please consider participating in this great opportunity if you can.
If you have questions, please contact Alissa, not me.
Thanks!
Sharon
“Hello!
My name is Alissa Lange, and I'm an Assistant Research Professor at the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) at Rutgers University. In 2012, I co-developed a library-based Spanish-English bilingual STEM informal education program for preschoolers
and their families with the New Brunswick Free Public Library. It is called the Math and Science Story Time (MASST) series. We have run the program every summer since then with much success.
I received a grant from the PSEG Foundation's Spark program this year to expand MASST, and we're trying to identify another library that might be interested in running MASST this summer 2016. We are particularly interested in libraries that serve Spanish-speaking
patrons.
We have funds to pay a presenter and to buy the kits (including books and hands-on activity materials) that the library can keep. *MASST will be no cost to the library or participants.*
We need a library partner that can,
1) Allow us to collect data on the program (e.g., surveys of families, with their permission)
2) Provide space to hold the sessions
3) Accommodate the sessions in their schedules. Each session is about 1-1.5 hours long and sessions are typically held on one weekday evening per week for 8 (preferably consecutive) weeks between June-August
4) Assist with signing up families
5) Assist with advertising (e.g., post on website, put up flyers)
I have attached a summary document with more information on MASST and the results we have found in the past.
Please let me know if this sounds like it might be of interest to you and your patrons, and we can find a time to talk about plans in more detail soon.
Thank you for your time!”
Kind regards,
Alissa
