Subject: News tip: Bicycles in a library!

FYI,

I’m passing this interesting announcement along from Arlen in case anyone is interested:

My name is Arlen Kimmelman. I am the school librarian at Clearview Regional
High School in Mullica Hill, NJ. I am donating four recumbent stationary
bicycles to my high school library.

I raised the funds using the following request:

Exercise students' brains and bodies at the same time! I'm the school
librarian at a Southern NJ high school. I'd like to put three recumbent
cycle workstations in our library for students to read books or do school
work while they are pedaling. I got the idea from a university in Alabama

Picture it: fidgety students during study halls -- students who don't own
electronic devices to use while exercising elsewhere -- students with
opportunities to move written into their IEPs -- or just reading and
cycling without bugs and humidity! Libraries are places of joy,
socializing, and learning. Help our library also become a place for total
well being!

Teachers including gym teachers, school and public librarians, community
members (who, by the way, were also contributors), students… Anyone else I
asked about the donation thought that this was a great opportunity to
incorporate health and learning and to change the stagnant way people
perceive libraries. Stationary bicycles are an appropriate way to use the
available space in a positive, forward-thinking, and multi-educational
manner.

The bikes ended up being on sale when I finally got the money and the
approval, so I got four bikes instead of three! I ordered them today, and
they should arrive soon.

I hope you think this is as news-worthy as I do! I'll let you know when
they've arrived and in place!

Arlen
