Library Design Strategies in the Age of Social Distancing

How are librarians preparing to allow people back into the library once we have all moved beyond curbside delivery? There will certainly be a lot of anxiety and wariness of internal spaces, close contact, and safety for both the staff and the public. Join Architect Jim Kovach, Senior Associate at VMDO, for a webinar on architectural strategies that librarians might consider employing to create a safe and welcoming environment in the Covid-19 era. Jim will give a broad overview of the challenges libraries are facing in the wake of the pandemic, and speak about a few trends he is seeing as libraries begin to reopen. He will then present suggestions on maintenance, space allocation and how library services are adjusting their physical spaces for social distancing using what they have on hand. We hope to then have a robust dialog during Q+A at the end.

Jim Kovach has presented at ALA conferences, and his work has been featured in Library Journal. He has served as an Adjunct Professor of Architecture at the University of Virginia, his alma mater.
