Meet a Few of Our Internship Grant Alumnx

Kandace Coston: 2015 Alumnx, Associate Editor at Lee & Low Books

When Kandace Coston read the email on her phone saying she'd won a summer internship grant from WNDB, she did a victory dance in the middle of the sidewalk. Kandace completed her internship in 2015 at Lee & Low Books as part of their marketing & publicity team. At the end of the internship, she was invited to join the L&L editorial team full time -- another victory dance! Kandace has found her calling as an editor of children's books. The job allows her to pursue her love of language, problem-solving, and storytelling and every project brings interesting challenges. Over the past few years, Kandace has grown as an editor and presenter, serving as faculty at a variety of conferences, and in December 2020 she was promoted to associate editor—more victory dancing! Kandace is looking forward to new acquisitions, challenges, and more causes for victory dances in the near future.

Alex Hightower: 2016 Alumnx, Associate Editor at Hachette Book Group

The summer internship grant from WNDB was truly Alexandra’s springboard into book publishing! With that grant support, she was able to complete a literary agency internship at Writers House during the summer of 2016 and soon after made her way to Random House Children’s Books as an Editorial Assistant with the Delacorte Press team. After spending some years there and climbing the ranks, she’s now an Associate Editor at Hachette Book Group and is proud to be part of the Little, Brown Books for Young Readers imprint. She finds it an honor and joy to collaborate with authors on picture books, middle grade, and YA works and she's thrilled to bring a wide range of books to young readers everywhere. Outside of work, she co-founded Inkluded, a nonprofit organization that leads an annual tuition-free publishing course that brings aspiring professionals from diverse backgrounds into the publishing industry.

We're proud to have you on the team, Alex and Kandace!

Many marginalized writers celebrate the moment that they receive “a seat at the table,” and this is quite often their goal. Yet, others of us believe that having a seat at the table is another way of waiting to be included or invited to attend, thereby still centering whiteness. This April 7, 2021 panel will focus on writers of color who are creating their own tables, including Tongo Eisen Martin, Tara Betts, and Neelanjana Banerjee.
