Library Assistant, Children’s Library (Part-time)
Bernards Township Library has an immediate opening for a twelve-hour-a-week
Library Assistant (Salary Grade Level 1) in the Children’s Library. While the position is
permanent, the hours are subject to change due to the library’s schedule during the
pandemic. Currently, the hours for this position are: Monday 12:00-4:00pm, Wednesday
4:00-8:00pm, Thursday 1:00-5:00pm plus one Saturday and one Sunday per month.
The Library is a vibrant and active cultural center in the community and is much valued by
Township residents for its wide range of materials and services. Our successful applicant
will work as a team player with other Library staff members, striving to offer excellent
customer service.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: The successful candidate will report to the Children’s Supervisor
and perform a variety of general library clerical duties. Duties include, but are not limited
to, checking library materials in and out, assisting the public in the use of library
resources and equipment, issuing library cards, and more.
REQUIREMENTS: The qualified candidate will have the ability to accurately perform a
considerable volume of routine, detailed work; to follow written and oral directions; and to
handle multiple activities and/or interruptions. She or he will have demonstrated the
capacity to deal tactfully and courteously with the public and to maintain effective working
relationships with co-workers. Complete ease in the use of computers is essential.
He or she will readily adapt to a variety of assignments; and have the strength to lift 30
pounds and/or maneuver 50-pound book carts; and be able to retrieve library materials
from both high and low-level shelving. Library Assistants must be fluent in English
sufficient to perform the duties of the position. Fluency in other languages is a plus.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: High school graduation or equivalency along with
previous library experience or some college or library courses. Background in children’s
literature and knowledge of books/eBooks/movies, etc. helpful.
