Subject: Applications Being Accepted to Join a Public Librarian Advisory Council for a Computer Science Program in VA
Date: January 7th 2022

FYI,

I’m passing along this opportunity that I received from the Children’s and Youth Services Consultant from the Library of Virginia. ~Sharon

Socks, Stories & Scratch is focused on computer science programs for youth 9-11 years old, and hopes to specifically target Black urban youth and build their sense of belonging in STEM. This project combines Critter Code, an existing curriculum offered by CodeVA which combines slow-making, storytelling and the computer program Scratch, as well as a new professional development for librarians. The goal is to support public librarians in becoming Critter Code champions and providing this program in their community.

Our project is currently building a Librarian Advisory Council (LAC), a stipend-based role for 5-7 public librarians. The LAC will review materials, provide feedback and help guide the youth curriculum and librarian PD. We hope to have librarians from across the US who can bring a variety of perspectives, and who represent small or under-resourced urban libraries that serve Black communities. The submission is in mid-January, the award would be in the fall of 2022 and work would start in January 2023 to run for 4 years.
