Hi, Karen,
Since you posted to the entire NJYAC discussion list I’m responding on the list instead of just responding to you because others might also be interested. I’m not aware of any legislation like this in NJ (yet!). I am aware of what Follett proposed and then decided to not do after the outcry from librarians.
The NJ Association of School Librarians (NJASL) is very involved in intellectual freedom and issues of parental rights. If you’re a member of NJASL, you may know that Mary Moyer is the Legislative Consultant from NJASL to the NJ Legislature and keeps the membership abreast of any of this type of legislation. You can contact her at ...@njasl.org" style="color: #2199e8; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.3; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">mmo...@njasl.org. You might want to get involved with the NJASL’s Advocacy committee who is also involved in this as well. They have a Legislative subcommittee under the Professional Development and Resources Committee too. I don’t see that there’s a specific contact person for the Legislative Subcommittee, though. Here’s a list of their committees: https://njasl.org/CommitteesCharges with contact information. I know they’re always looking for more volunteers on the committees. Here’s a link to their volunteer form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1GAinq9ECelvA78A5kdXWx4VRhvyETbXHYPoqJI3B190/viewform?edit_requested=true
The school folks have also created a Rapid Response Team where volunteers can sign up to speak up at school board hearings, write articles, or just show up to be a person who’s supporting those who are speaking out, among other actions. I don’t know if they need additional people for the team, but here’s the email for the Rapid Response Team: ...@njasl.org" style="color: #2199e8; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.3; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">r...@njasl.org.
If I do hear of any legislation being proposed I’ll definitely send out announcements about it.
Thanks for reaching out.
~Sharon

Subject: NJ parental rights bills?
Hi Sharon,
Hope you are well. I wondered if you were aware of any legislation is being proposed in New Jersey that concerns parental rights and intellectual freedom in school libraries. I am a member of the Association of Independent School Librarians (AISL) and this blog post may interest you and any others at the State Library: https://aislnews.org/ok-we-stopped-follett-any-righteous-anger-left-for-the-bad-actors-forcing-bad-choices/
I would like to be involved in fighting this type of legislation and if you know of anything brewing at the state level I would appreciate it if you could let me know.
Cheers,
Karen
