Subject: Read Across America: Webinar Presentation Opportunity
Date: January 4th 2023

FYI,

In celebration of Read Across America 2023, the ALA Committee on Literacy is seeking to host two webinars highlighting the work of librarians who are facilitating creative, inclusive, innovative programs and projects for Read Across America.

Goal:
To spotlight and inspire creative, innovative, and inclusive programming for Read Across America

Webinar Date:

Tuesday, March 14, 2023

Criteria:

"Kids should be able to be the main characters in their own lives. We want them to know that who they are matters...[but] some decision-makers are trying to ban books, dictate what teachers say, and block kids from learning our shared stories to confront injustice and build [a] more perfect union."

  1. Representation and Inclusion. Programs should demonstrate representation of diverse experiences and backgrounds in ways that humanize people, stories, and experiences across cultures, class, religions, abilities, gender, etc.
  2. Visual Story Sharing. Photographs are highly encouraged for aiding in the retelling of your program and experience.
  3. Permission. This webinar will be recorded and requires release for use of any photos or recordings.
  4. Location. To accommodate the schedules of classroom teachers and K-12 library workers, we are arranging two different panels. One panel presentation and discussion will be facilitated by members from Eastern/Central time zones. A second panel presentation and discussion will be presented later, on the same day, by members from Mountain/Pacific time zones. All are welcome to attend both webinars.

Possible types of programs:

  • Collaboration between school and public libraries
  • Intergenerational literacy sharing opportunities
  • Family and community literacy projects

Presenters:

  • Each panel will be composed of 3 or 4 librarians who will share visual stories and answer questions.
  • Representation from both school and public libraries; school-public collaboration ideal!

Timeline:

  • No panelists will be selected before January 15, 2023. After January 15, as many speakers as possible will be selected from the submissions received at that time, but we will continue accepting submissions until all panel spots have been filled.
