FYI,
The Children’s Book Committee (CBC) at Bank Street College of Education announced on January 27, 2023 that two books are the winners of its inaugural Margaret Wise Brown Board Book Award for excellence in literature for very young children. Give Me a Snickle! by Alisha Sevigny (Orca Book Publishers) won in the 0-18 months range. Me and the Family Tree by Carole Boston Weatherford, illustrated by Ashleigh Corrin (Sourcebooks) won in the 18-36 months range. This prize recognizes outstanding board books published—or picture books adapted to board book format—in 2021 or 2022 for children ages 0-3 years.
The CBC evaluated hundreds of board books as part of the annual review process for its Best Children’s Books of the Year lists in 2021 and 2022 and recommended approximately 17 titles to a distinguished jury.
To celebrate the new award, the committee will host a virtual event on March 9. Dr. Perri Klass will present a keynote titled “Board Books in the Pediatric Exam Room: Something to Chew On” and Rachel Payne will moderate a panel discussion titled “The Ones They Come Back To: What Makes a Best Board Book?” Bank Street College President Shael Polakow-Suranksy will share opening remarks and the winning authors and illustrator will present an acceptance speech at the end of the program.
