Upcoming Children's Book Discussions

 

Do you love book talk? Are you interested in observing media evaluation in action? Although ALSC award discussions are confidential, Notable discussions are open meetings!

 

The 2025 Notable Children's Books committee is meeting via Zoom this month to discuss and evaluate great titles released in 2024. Observers are welcome to drop in and listen to the conversation at any time throughout the sessions. This is a great opportunity to get familiarized with the evaluation process.

National Institute Continues to Grow

 

ALSC's National Institute, September 19-21, 2024, is shaping up to be a dynamic, content-packed professional development opportunity, featuring incredible general session speakers (so far: Meg Medina AND Daniel Nayeri!) and a diverse line-up of 32 education programs, plus discussion groups and networking opportunities -- all devoted to library service to children and families!

 

Recently ALSC added , scheduled for Thursday, September 19, preceding the Opening General Session, where participants can further grow their skills:

Early Numeracy in the Children’s Library

"Math is all around us and is inextricably woven into all of the physical and social worlds we inhabit. Just like literacy, numeracy actually begins at birth. Early numeracy refers to the development of all the mathematical reasoning that children learn during their early childhood years, before formal schooling begins. Early numeracy can be conceptualized into these three main concept areas: Number sense; shapes, sizes, spatial awareness; and patterns, sets, sorting and measuring."

I Love My Librarian Award

 

ALA invites library users nationwide to nominate their favorite librarians for the I Love My Librarian Award, recognizing outstanding public service contributions of librarians.

 

Ten librarians each will receive $5,000 and be honored at an award ceremony at the 2025 LibLearnX Conference in Phoenix. Free full conference registration is part of the award package!

 

Who's your favorite librarian?! Nominations are accepted online now through Monday, September 30, 2024.

Children's Books Exploring Gardening

 

The Quicklists Consulting committee compiled a list of fresh and fun books for nature lovers, backyard explorers, and budding horticulturalists. From fungi to flowers, windowsills to backyards, the list of illustrated books delivers dozens of stories about the beauty and wonder of gardens big and small.

 

Created for the American Horticultural Society, the list includes fiction and nonfiction titles for children, birth to grade 7. Grade ranges are listed for each book along with bibliographic information and a brief plot description.
