The Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) celebrates Media Literacy Week with the Claudia Kishi Club on Monday, 10/26, 5 p.m. Pacific, 8 p.m. Eastern

Join Sue Ding, director of the Netflix short documentary film, The Claudia Kishi Club, and the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) for this virtual event as we view clips of the film and have a discussion about the portrayal of the iconic Japanese-American character from The Baby-Sitter's Club books with cast members Sarah Kuhn and Phil Yu. In the film, Ding interviews Asian American creatives who pay passionate tribute to the iconic, stereotype-busting "Baby-Sitters Club" character. This event is co-hosted by NAMLE, California Film Institute (CFI), Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) & the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA).

Building Literacy in Every Library Pt 1 - Comprehension Basics: Developing Critical Thinking to Discover Meaning

In this webinar, learn how to implement programs and services that will provide literacy support for early readers ages 5-9. An expert in the field of elementary education will speak about the key concept of why it's essential for children to develop critical thinking skills as they learn how to read. We will discuss how important it is to know the parts of a story and how to develop knowledge of new words in order to gain a greater understanding of the text. We'll share ideas for programs, book recommendations and reader's advisory that will help connect with children and caregivers on the subject of literacy.

Guest speakers
Shelley M. Diaz is the Reviews Editor at School Library Journal. She was formerly a youth selector for BookOps: Brooklyn Public Library & New York Public Library. She has also written for Kirkus Reviews, Shelf Awareness, The Horn Book, and the New York Times. Shelley teaches young adult literature to future librarians at City University of New York (CUNY)'s Queens College. 

Mollie Welsh Kruger is a Supervised Fieldwork Advisor and Course Instructor at Bank Street College of Education in New York, NY, where she also co-chairs the Bank Street Children's Book Committee. Kruger teaches Clarifying Comprehension: Practical Strategies for Educators, and her academic interests focus on children's literature, integrated learning/arts education, professional development and working with families. She has 18 years of experience as a second-grade teachers for the NYC Department of Education and currently provides professional development on literacy and literature for early readers.
