Public involvement

May 11th 2010

I know that many patrons and FOL members would like to do something more active, above and beyond the postcard and email initiatives.  What about a weeklong campaign when people would go to their libraries and check out the item or items that they would miss the most if the library wasn’t there?  The newspapers could interview people leaving with (hopefully) armfuls of books and movies, and show our empty shelves at the end of the week.  This would be from the public, not the librarians, so hopefully hav ...Continue Reading

Need Information About a Children's Book

May 10th 2010

Hi everyone, I have a patron who is looking for a children's picture book which he thinks was popular (or published?) in the 1960s. He does not know the author or the title of the book but he thinks it had a circus theme with clowns. He does remember that there was a line in the book that repeated, "Is everyone ready, all but Freddie?" Does anyone know the name of the book this patron is looking for? He wants to read it to his grandson. Please respond to my email address listed below. Thanks. Suzi I. ...Continue Reading

ALSC Institute in September

May 6th 2010

Please excuse any cross-postings. ALSC Institute: there’s nothing else like it.  Taking place in Atlanta on September 23 – 25, 2010 at the Emory Conference Center, the ALSC Institute touches on some of the most important topics in library service for children.  You’re sure to go home feeling reinvigorated about the profession and more connected to others in the field.  Curious why you should attend the ALSC Institute?  For as little as $360 you receive nearly 30 hours of educations programming t ...Continue Reading

free and inexpensive stuff for schools

May 5th 2010

I was at NJLA last week and learned about this free offer for schools. http://classroom.history.com/america-dvd/event/form Also, I was at the NJLA author presentation earlier in the month and saw a couple of authors I can highly recommend for school visits: Grades 5-8 -- Edgar-awarding winning mystery author (who also was an improv comic and Madison Ave. ad writer for many years -- very entertaining and funny and great at inspiring kids to write -- is now (in this economy -for 2010) offering a FREE author visit (onl ...Continue Reading

preschool computers

May 5th 2010

Has anyone tried alternatives to the preschool computers sold by AWE?   If so, do you use your own computers with age-appropriate games installed and locked?  Or have you found an alternate source for pre-loaded preschool computer experiences?  What do you do for the little ones? We’d rather not have the preschoolers online, but do want to offer a computing experience for the little ones. We have had AWE computers for 3 years and have been moderately satisfied. We just wonder if there might be a ch ...Continue Reading
