Hi Suzanne, Many of the classics have been illustrated. Bruce Coville retells some of Shakespeare including Hamlet and Romeo and Juliette illustrations are soft with a lot of earth tones. There is also a beautifully illustrated version of Silent Night with the pictures of Thomas Kinkaide. There is also a series called Visions in Poetry that is illustrated. The series included The Raven by Poe and the Lady of Shalott by Tennyson with lots of black and white illustrations. >>> Sally Shabouk ...@yahoo.com> ...Continue Reading

Here is a list of picture books that have adult appeal and might work, although as picture books go, some of them are a bit wordy, but your patron might be able to condense some of the longer bits. I'm currently working on a bibliography "Great School Age Readalouds" (for parents, community volunteers, and teachers) -- attached is a VERY early draft (just gathering ideas at this point) but many of the titles might be quite useful for your adult day care volunteer... (also, if anyone here wants to contribute titles and/or themes to this bibliography, I'm eager to get them!) Hi, Suzanne.   What about Tales from Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan?  The stories are short, but interesting (some are pretty wacky, so your customer will want to read through them first) and there are drawings that accompany the text to keep listeners interested.   Kimberly Kimberly L. Hi, Beverly,   I'm happy to hear that your son was pleased with our library!   Good luck with your special needs collection.  I look forward to meeting you some day to hear more about it.  I no longer read to the patients at the nursing home (mainly because the management changed hands and they stopped asking, but also because we get busier and busier here), although if asked, we will visit again.   Best,   Anne Anne Lemay Head of Youth Services Franklin Township Library 485 ...Continue Reading

Hi Anne, My son just recently moved into an apartment in Franklin Township to attend Rutgers University. One of the first things he did was to register for a library card at the Franklin Township Library. He raved about it! I am Head of Youth Services at the Bordentown Branch Library of the Burlington County Library System.I read your e-mail about reading to elderly patients. At the moment I am involved in developing and implementing a Special Needs Collection which requires a lot of time and investigative work. I wi ...Continue Reading

I was asked to read aloud to a group of 14 Alzheimer’s patients to help them “engage.”  Reading aloud about events from the past can help Alzheimer’s patients connect to the reader along with providing an entertaining diversion.   I found that short essays about the past were best.    I don't know if the following pieces will work meet your customer's needs, but it may give her a place to start.   Best, &nb ...Continue Reading

Picturebooks for adult day care

January 27th 2010

Hi, everyone -- We have a regular customer who volunteers to read aloud at an adult day care center. Many of the people she works with have conditions that have affected their ability to pay attention for a long period of time or fully understand what she's reading. She reads a lot of simple poetry to them and has even had some success with children's magazines, but picture books are the hardest category to find something that works. If you've helped someone in a similar situation or can think of a title that's sim ...Continue Reading
