See information below about the Library of Congress 2020 National Book Festival.
Every year the Festival has a Parade of States, where each state’s Center for the Book has great information for kids and families. Here’s information about what the NJ Center for the Book will feature at their virtual booth this year. This year, as usual, I’ll be volunteering at the Festival on behalf of the Center. I hope you’ll stop by!
The New Jersey Center for the Book has selected Robobaby (Clarion, an imprint of Houghton, Mifflin Harcourt Books for Young Readers, 2020) by David Wiesner to represent New Jersey at the 2020 National Book Festival. The book is the state’s selection for the Festival’s “Discover Great Places Through Reading” map. Each state chooses one book about the state or by an author from that state that is a good read for children or young adults. The map is listed in “Great Reads About Great Places” on the websites of the Library of Congress http://read.gov/greatreads/ and New Jersey Center for the Book http://www.njcenterforthebook.org/.
In Wiesner’s Robobaby, a family awaits the arrival of a new baby – only this is a family of robots – and baby Flange must be assembled from many parts. The adult robots are completely out of their depth and unwilling to admit it. It’s up to tech savvy big sister Cathode “Cath,” to come to their rescue. This chaotic story, reminiscent of a Marx Brothers movie, is laugh out loud funny. Gorgeously illustrated by Wiesner, a three-time Caldecott winner, it joyously celebrates girl ingenuity and maker culture in a fantastically fun way.
This year the National Book Festival will be a virtual event held on September 25-27, 2020 at LOC.Gov/bookfest with a special PBS broadcast on September 26 at 6 pm ET. States will feature videos of their Great Read selections in the festival’s virtual Roadmap to Reading exhibits.
The New Jersey Center for the Book was founded to promote books, reading, libraries and literacy.
