Position Title: Youth Service Librarian

Join the diverse and vibrant team at the Atlantic City Free Public Library as the Youth Services Librarian and help provide responsive services to a community with a wide range of different social and ethnic backgrounds.  The Youth Services Librarian provides library services to the general public especially children and teens on a day-to-day basis; works closely with the Head of Adult Services and Library Director; coordinates the scheduling of staff at the Youth Services desk of the Main Library Facility ; provides customer service to our public and works with the all staff to improve services and make recommendations for improved service; plans and conducts events and programs for children and teens; makes school visits and regularly communicates with the Atlantic City Board of Education, school principals and teachers;  collections management and development for the Youth Services Collections; performs multiple functions that include some tasks requiring knowledge of cataloging and classification.

The position requires a Masters in Library Science from an accredited University and excellent organizational and communications skills. Candidates must have customer service experience. Applicants that will graduate with an MLS degree in the Spring of 2021 will be accepted. Salary: minimum $54,953 annually depending on experience,  35 hours a week. Schedule based on Library needs, schedule includes nights and weekends. Job Environment:

  • Maintain a high level of service to our public using the level of experience and training that are required in this position.
  • Be able to multi-task and maintain a high level of varied tasks including scheduling, works with the Adult Services Librarian to oversee daily operations at the Branch and Main library facilities.
  • The position requires constant contact with the public in person, by email and telephone. Other contacts are with library staff.
  • Work is performed at the Youth Services Department of the Main library and will be assigned some hours at the library “helpdesk”. The “helpdesk” is a combined tradition Reference service as well as public computer center. These service areas are busy, sometimes noisy and with frequent interruptions. The position requires that you provide assistance to patrons, interpreting policy, supervising public areas, guiding patrons in locating and using materials and representing the library in the community.
  • The Main library is centrally located in the City business district and is very much an urban library experiencing a wide variety of clientele. Staff are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner within this diverse community.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervises activities at the Youth Services Department and reports to the Library Director.
  • Attends the weekly team meeting which oversees the on-going planning and development of the library.
  • Plans and conducts preschool story hour, summer reading programs for children ages preschool through teens.
  • Plans and conducts programming for the library “makerspace” and oversees the Teen Advisory group.
  • Communicates with home schoolers, teachers, students, parents and community members to improve library services.
  • Provides attractive displays and settings to encourage library use.
  • Hires special performers in conjunction with programs.
  • Assist library patrons in finding materials, answering questions and providing reader’s advisory.
  • Organizes and gives tours of the library including school group visits.
  • Works with the library Public Relations Officer to develop flyers, brochures, etc…
  • Reads and responds to correspondence and email pertaining to youth services.
  • Collection development of all Youth Services Department collections.
  • Compiles statistics and contributes to the monthly library statistic reports.
  • Works at the library “helpdesk” as needed especially during evening and weekend hours.
  • Enforces library policy and procedures.
  • Works with all staff in planning programs and maintains effective working relationships with all staff members.
  • Attends library training, workshops, conferences and other continuing education related to youth services as approved by the Library Director.
