Re: summer reading program questions

October 5th 2010

Commenting on Susan's mention of teen volunteers, we are very fortunate to have at least 15-20 teen volunteers to work in Children's Services during the summer. And most of these teens, after working in Children's all morning, stay for the afternoon teen programs. They make a day of it bringing their lunch or running next door to Wendy's (using free coupons we get/give for summer reading incentives) or WaWa to get lunch/snack. Sometimes food is a part of the teen programs like "Pizza & a Paperback" book ...Continue Reading

I like your idea Lisa to provide the weekly contest with clues to guess the book. Giving them a reason to check in weekly is likely to help them keep interest in the library's summer reading program throughout the summer, beyond signing up. I am thinking that in our library we should to weekly prize drawings for giveaways, stuff from local businesses, for those turning in a ticket each week, perhaps in addition to a chance to win a final prize for getting to a certain marker in hours read. I'd also like to mention that ...Continue Reading

Re: summer reading program questions

October 5th 2010

Some of our teens are great readers but they don't want to sign up for the summer reading program. Something we have done for the last two summers that was quite popular was a contest where each week we provided a clue to a book and the teens had to provide the title and author of the book. Correct responses were entered into a drawing for a prize drawn at the end of the program. This year on the first day of summer reading a young man saw the info about the contest and was excited about that but was reluctant to si ...Continue Reading
