I hate to say it but for many many teens it is just not cool to go to the library, except for mandatory research, which unfortunately many parents do for them. I can't get them in at my branch no matter what. Lin Flores, Librarian Camden County Library System - Gloucester Twp. Hi Susan! So glad you sent this! I passed it along to my husband, and we met for dinner and came on over. It was a lot of fun! Rich used to do experiments for his cub scouts, but never had this kind of equipment. Probably a good thing considering their ADD level and the joys of liquid nitrogen -- Thanks again! Kathleen, thanks for your input. I'd like to do a tie-dye program but not all of our branches have meeting rooms so that would be out in some locations due to the mess factor. Other craft programs have been hit or miss, with some drawing maybe a half-dozen kids, which I think is a good number for that age. Saturday afternoon programming would probably go over like a lead balloon with the staff. Probably the most popular program this summer was a program where teens learned the basics of playing acoustic guitar. A ...Continue Reading

I agree with Kathleen. When I get disheartened I remind myself that 3-5 at a program is good....25-50 is amazing and over that is just incredible. What I've found is as long as communication lines are open (meaning you ask what the teens like or hate) you'll be ok, but we will usually have to fight with other life things...like is there a party in town, are the "cool kids" dissing it or coming, etc. Keep your spirits up and make sure that those hosting teen events actually LIKE teens...it'll be fine. ...Continue Reading

Lina, nine teens per program actually sounds like fairly good teen program attendance to me! Teen programs simply aren't going to draw the kinds of numbers that programs for young children draw, for various reasons (teens are too big for parents to force them to go to the library, teens have many other activities going on, including summer jobs, that compete with library programs, young teens without drivers' licenses are dependent on others for transportation). I found that my best attended programs were in Jul ...Continue Reading

Please excuse multiple postings. At our recent summer reading program wrap-up meeting one of our branch managers reported that her branch’s statistics this year were lower than previous years but more accurate because this year they based their count on the number of prize slips entered for the final prize drawing, one slip having been issued for each book entered into the log. This lead to a discussion of the methods used to count the total number of books read for the summer reading program. Our goal is ...Continue Reading

Hi Everyone, I often get e-mails from authors asking if I will pass along information about their books. I do so with the author’s knowledge that I am only passing it along as an FYI. The State Library in no way endorses these publications. Best, Sharon Rawlins, Youth Services Consultant, NJ State Library Ishigaq: The Quest Home by Andy Sibbald The author says : I would like you to consider this book of fiction for your library service. It is for 11-14 year olds but as you ...Continue Reading
