Hello, Singer/songwriter Patricia Shih presented an excellent program at our library this summer for teens who are interested in pursuing a music career. Shih shared the inside scoop on the music industry and provided optional performance coaching and songwriting help for those interested. Kids brought their guitars or sang to keyboard accompaniment and each one received individualized advice on how to project a good stage presence. Patricia is based in Huntington, NY. We will definitely invite her back! For mor ...Continue Reading

We're having a Hunger Games Lock In and one of the activities is going to be a scavenger hunt where the teens have to follow clues, find a book on the shelf, and then complete a challenge. It's not all finished yet but a few of the things we have planned are: First Aid--they'll have to find a first aid book on the shelf and the challenge there will be that they have to use toilet paper to wrap the heads, arms or legs of team mates. Survival food -- they have to locate a ...Continue Reading

Here is a fun idea: Decorate the library like the arena from The Hunger Games, and have a series of questions (that the librarians have gathered from survival guides and other training books) that the "tributes" can answer. If there are a lot of tributes, the librarians could even divide them into "districts" and let them compete as a team. If not, each tribute could play as an individual. Examples of questions can be found at the Scholastic Hunger Games website. -----Original Message- ...Continue Reading

Similar to this idea is a game in which the supplies are inside a circle. One person acts as the guard while the other players try to retrieve supplies. Anyone tagged by the guard is out. A co-worker, Doreen, suggested a game: remember the part in the book where the kid stays to protect the food the rich kids have stocked up on? Have the "food/supplies" in the middle or end of a room and have the kids race to get one of the items and back to their designated spot. Whomever gets back last is eliminated. -----Original Message----- From: leon...@bccls.org [mailto:leon...@bccls.org] Sent: Thursday, October 08, 2009 1:27 PM To: njy...@njstatelib.org Subject: [njyac] Re: Hunger Games Party Ideas? ...Continue Reading

How about camo face painting? Depending on time teams could work as game masters to design an arena (maybe diorama style). What about something on wilderness survival and/or edible plants? I know I kept thinking that there was no way I would be able to find food! You could maybe use info from The Worst Case Survival Handbook or contact a scout leader. If you subscribe to YALSA-BK there was a recent thread about this, you may want to check the archives. Have fun! ...Continue Reading

A costume contest might be interesting, since they play so much importance with the sponsors in the books. You could provide some odd and end materials (toilet paper, duct tape, etc.) to have kids come up with something in a short amount of time. Also, I know that Scholastic had handed out mockingjay pins at BookExpo. You could have blank stickers on hand for teens to design their own while they're waiting for the contest to start. Best of luck, sounds like a great idea! Nicole SignorettaNewark Public LibraryOn Thu, ...Continue Reading
