Summer Reading Theme and the Oil in the Gulf of Mexico

June 24th 2010

Dear All, Watchung Library's water-themed summer reading clubs and programs kick-off today, and like many libraries across the country, Watchung will be celebrating the oceans and sealife.    Hearing the news about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and understanding that it is human nature to want to help in some way, I am attaching a flyer that you may want to offer patrons who are looking for a positive way to help.  The flyer, compiled with the ki ...Continue Reading

Re: Grand Prizes for Summer Reading

June 17th 2010

Hi, there!\xA0 We offer small weekly incentives to the kids and then bigger prizes are given away at the end of the summer party.\xA0 In the past, I would put 10-20 bags together with 5-7 things in each bag.\xA0 We had so many finishers, though, we felt bad that only a handful were getting big prizes, so we're spreading the wealth this year.\xA0 Now each winner will get 1-2 things, depending on price, so we can have between 50-100 winners. Educational Warehouse (?) in Parsippany has a sale twice a year and I often get ...Continue Reading

RE: AWE Early Learning Stations

June 17th 2010

The screens and CPU are separate – and they have been working beautifully – not one hitch in almost a year with any of the 3 stations.  My staff is thrilled with them – before we had some old pc’s and we had to change discs for each game – so it involved a lot staff intervention and monitoring.  So this was a huge improvement – and with 40 some programs installed, I haven’t gotten one single complaint about not having enough games. FYI, Sharon Rawlins, Youth Services Consultant, NJ State Library The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), will launch a new blog this fall focusing on young adult literature, with our own NJ librarian Sarah Debraski (2008-2009 YALSA president) at the helm. In addition, YALSA is currently accepting nominations for the new blog\x92s name through June 30. \x93It makes sense for YALSA to have a literature focused blog, and I\x92m thrilled to be a part of its launch. I love young adult literature and I love ...Continue Reading
